  41. I have had good experience with Alinco Repair..... It's been three
  42. years but they did a fine job of repairs their original 2 mt ht for
  43. me.....And price was not unreasonable.....Good Luck....

  53. I'm a fairly newly licensed person and would like to get some pros/cons on 
  54. some HF rigs, specificlly the FT-890 and TS-450.  Both rigs are in my price range and
  55. seem to offer the features that I desire.  My main interest lies with CW so
  56. I know I'll want the 500khz filter in which ever one I choose.

  58. Instead of lecturing me on brands, I'd like to hear about specific points of each radio.
  59. I seem to remember reading this newsgroup a few months back and saw some discussion
  60. on the TS-580 vs the FT-990.  I would like somehting along that same thread.

  62. Here are some of my general observations:
  63. FT-890
  64.      Likes: Analog meter, size, audio sound, layout of the knobs/controls
  65.     Dislikes:  No numeric (ie keypad entry), 
  66.  
  67. TS-450
  68.     Likes: Keypad entry, seems to geared towards a higher end user (can
  69.     grow into the radio), wide array of filter options.
  70.     Dislikes: Digital/bar meter, controls maybe to small for my club fists,
  71.     display maybe hard to read with my poor vision except under optimal
  72.     conditions.

  74. I'm  looking for you'all to give the technical guidance that new hams look to older/more
  75. experienced hams for.

  94. I picked up a TS-440 with no filters. Another ham in the area has the
  95. TS-440 with both of Kenwoods 500 and 250 Hz filters (another CW fanatic). 
  96. I just about picked up both but instead started looking at the specs on
  97. the International Radio filters.  They have steeper skirts than the
  98. Kenwood and so I decided to try the 400 Hz first.  It did not drop in but
  99. works much better than expected.  My old FT-101 500 Hz filter let too much
  100. through the sides.  This one works well.

  133. This seemed like an opportune moment for a post I have been wanting
  134. to make for sometime.

  136. I read the QST article with much interest, as I am going
  137. to be looking for a used HF rig in a couple of months or so. I am 
  138. waiting for my no-code ticket, and am studying code right now. I 
  139. was thinking of getting a tranceiver to listen to W1AW code practice,
  140. but instead got a ten-tec single band kit, which I am goint to build 
  141. this weekend, thus postponing the tranceiver purchase until after
  142. I have my novice ticket.

  144. So, please send me your advice on what I should look for in a used
  145. HF rig. I expect to be able to spend around $400-$450 max, for the
  146. rig, tuner, and power supply. So: 
  147.  
  148. - What models would fit the above criteria?
  149. - What features should I look for?
  150. - What should I avoid?
  151. - Can I get something which is all solid-state for the above price
  152. range?
